There is a large discrepancy between Venezuela’s official production figures and the substantially lower production data reported by international agencies. In addition, domestic
petroleum consumption has likely been much higher than officially reported. The debate around the production, domestic consumption and export figures is important for at least four reasons.

Está claro que América Latina no podrá aislar­se por completo de la crisis financiera mundial. El Fondo Monetario Internacional ahora prevé que el crecimiento económico en la región será de sólo 2,5% en 2009, en comparación con su anterior proyección de un 3,2%. Los países que dependen más de la exportación de commodities serán los que sufrirán las mayores bajas en el crecimiento, con Venezuela a la cabeza del listado. Aquellos países con exportaciones más diversificadas, como Brasil y México, verán menores caídas. No hay un consenso, sin embargo, en cuánto durará la crisis. Los optimistas creen que lo peor habrá pasado para fines de 2009, mientras que los pesimis­tas creen que se extenderá hasta 2010 o más allá.

The debate about Mexico’s stability and viability has now become commonplace in the United States. Ominous books warning about dire scenarios for the country from nonexperts have long been a staple of the tabloid media. But this time it is different: now mainstream business magazines have joined the fray, as have credible and independent entities such as Stratfor, a global intelligence firm. Much more relevant, the U.S. Joint Forces Command recently published a study warning that Mexico, as well as Pakistan, could become a failed state.
Is the Mexican government really about to collapse?
